Casa Akai is located in the Punta de Mita development, Nayarit, Mexico, on a 4,560m2 beachfront lot. Originally developed ten years ago by architect Jose de Yturbe, this project was later commissioned to architect Guillermo Michel and Joaquin Homs Studio for renovation and the addition of new spaces. The main challenge was to preserve the original layout while modifying the previous home’s solid white and red palette, which created harsh reflections. It was also essential to maximise the existing marble, stone, and carpentry finishes.

The original house lacked a home theatre, a game room, and a wine bar. The family room was divided into three separate areas, making it difficult to remain outdoors during the summer season. The new design introduced enclosed areas with air conditioning, maintaining communication between spaces. The main palapa was reimagined to expand capacity, and the wine bar enlarged to suit a house with eight bedrooms.

Three new basement spaces were created: the game room, home theatre, and wine bar. The swimming pool was extended without affecting the jacuzzi, visually integrating the façade into one continuous water feature. The interiors were softened through the use of acid-treated Parota wood, warm neutral tones, and organic materials, creating harmonious spaces filled with comfort, tranquillity, and warmth for a timeless, sensorial residential experience.
